Check the Kernel Version

Check the currently installed kernel version.

Default Storage Settings

Change the default repository for your system architecture and Rocky Linux version.

This is the name of the repository, and it doesn't matter if you change it.
mirrorlist
Specifiy a URL that provides a list of mirror servers from which the package can be downloaded.
Get a list of mirror servers that match your system's architecture($basearch) and Rocky Linux version($releasever).
baseurl
Specify the base URL to download the package from. This URL points to a single server, and packages are downloaded directly from that server.
gpgcheck
Set the URL or path to the repository that contains the GNU Privacy Guard (GPG) key. The GPG key is a cryptographic signature used to authenticate rpm packages.

[Note] When bothmirrorlist and baseurl are set, mirrorlist takes precedence, with baseurl serving as an alternate option.

Clear the cache before updating

Delete the cache where metadata for existing downloaded packages is stored.

Install the kernel

Install the kernel by specifying a version

[Note] Rocky Linux packages 8.8 and earlier are not supported.

Install the latest kernel

When you install the kernel, you also install the dependency packages kernel-core and kernel-modules.

Check package installation

Check that the kernel packages are installed correctly.

Restart the OS

Restart the OS to apply the kernel update.

[root@rocky810 ~]# sync; reboot

[Select]. Create a configuration file for the GRUB2 bootloader

Update the system's boot menu to reflect the newly installed kernel or other boot items.

dnf, yum will automatically update the GRUB2 configuration file.

[root@rocky810 ~]# grub2-mkconfig -o /etc/grub2.cfg

Check for kernel updates

Verify that the kernel version has been updated properly.

[root@rocky810 ~]# uname -r
4.18.0-553.16.1.el8_10.x86_64

Change the kernel boot order

If you have multiple kernels installed, change the boot order so that you can boot into the desired kernel.

Rocky versions below 8.10

Check the default kernel

Check the currently defaulted kernel.

[root@rocky810 ~]# grubby --default-kernel
/boot/vmlinuz-4.18.0-553.16.1.el8_10.x86_64

List of currently installed kernels

View a list of currently installed kernels.

[root@rocky810 ~]# grubby --info=ALL | grep ^kernel | grep -v rescue

Change the default kernel

Change the default kernel by selecting one of the currently installed kernel lists.

[root@rocky810 ~]# grubby --set-default="/boot/vmlinuz-4.18.0-553.8.1.el8_10.x86_64"
The default is /boot/loader/entries/ea5b6e1e7bc09da25505ebb3a26a8bf4-4.18.0-553.8.1.el8_10.x86_64.conf with index 4 and kernel /boot/vmlinuz-4.18.0-553.8.1.el8_10.x86_64
[root@rocky810 ~]# grubby --default-kernel
/boot/vmlinuz-4.18.0-553.8.1.el8_10.x86_64

Restart the OS

Restart the OS for the boot order change to take effect.

Rocky 8.10 and later versions

Currently, the official Rocky 8.10 image does not allow me to make kernel changes with the grubby command, so I use the shell script below.

How to use scripts

Enter the number of the kernel you want to boot from the list of kernels that is output after running the shell script.

gpgkey
The path to the GPG key file to validate the package signature.

Restart the OS

Restart the OS to apply the kernel update.

[root@rocky95 ~]# sync; reboot

[Select]. Create a configuration file for the GRUB2 bootloader

Update the system's boot menu to reflect the newly installed kernel or other boot items.

dnf, yum will automatically update the GRUB2 configuration file.

[root@rocky95 ~]# grub2-mkconfig -o /etc/grub2.cfg

Check for kernel updates

Verify that the kernel version has been updated properly.

[root@rocky810 ~]# uname -r
4.18.0-553.16.1.el8_10.x86_64

Change the kernel boot order

If you have multiple kernels installed, change the boot order so that you can boot into the desired kernel.

Check the default kernel

Check the currently defaulted kernel.

[root@rocky95 ~]# grubby --default-kernel

View a list of currently installed kernels.

[root@rocky95 ~]# grubby --info=ALL | grep ^kernel | grep -v rescue

kernel="/boot/vmlinuz-5.14.0-503.22.1.el9_5.x86_64"

Change the default kernel

Change the default kernel by selecting one of the currently installed kernel lists.

[root@rocky95 ~]# grubby --set-default="/boot/vmlinuz-5.14.0-503.14.1.el9_5.x86_64"
The default is /boot/loader/entries/858382f092494811bf89e090de079ab1-5.14.0-503.14.1.el9_5.x86_64.conf with index 0 and kernel /boot/vmlinuz-5.14.0-503.14.1.el9_5.x86_64
[root@rocky95 ~]# grubby --default-kernel
